The Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Programme (PDP) focuses on creating a critical awareness of socio-political issues, cultural contexts, and contemporary media practices, particularly in the African landscape. The course is designed to empower photographers to document and engage with critical social issues using ethical storytelling and visual narratives.

The PDP is open to applicants from diverse backgrounds, offering a space for those who are passionate about using photography to tell meaningful stories. If you’re looking to hone your skills or start your journey into photojournalism, this course is for you. 

We welcome: 

  • Practicing photojournalists and documentary photographers who want to refine their skills. 
  • Individuals with recognised prior learning in photography who are keen to advance their skills in photojournalism and documentary photography. 
  • Graduates in media studies or related fields who wish to enter the world of photojournalism. 

Note: Applicants should have a reasonable command of the English language to fully engage with the course content. 

Course Modules Overview: 

The PDP covers several essential areas of study to equip students with the skills they need to succeed in this dynamic field. Here’s a breakdown of the key modules: 

Technical Practice 

  • Learn camera controls and techniques to become proficient in using a Digital SLR camera. 
  • Training includes photography, video recording, tripod use, and voice recorders. 
  • Gain hands-on experience in post-production and digital workflow to fine-tune your images and videos. 

Photojournalism 

  • Develop storytelling skills through single images and photo series. 
  • Understand the power of news photography, how images communicate messages, and what makes a photo newsworthy. 
  • Assess work based on technical competence, creativity, and relevance to current events. 

Visual Narrative 

  • Engage in in-depth research to produce thoughtful documentary projects. 
  • Learn to approach themes and subjects from multiple perspectives, resulting in well-rounded, impactful stories. 

Visual Studies 

  • Understand the theory and practice of image-making, from observational skills to analytical thinking. 
  • Explore pictorial conventions across time and cultures, building a solid foundation in visual literacy. 
  • Learn to discuss and interpret images, expanding your understanding of their role in society. 

Professional Practice 

  • Prepare to freelance or seek employment in fields like photojournalism, multimedia, and documentary photography. 
  • Learn how to build a career, from effective planning and design to understanding the professional landscape. 
  • Gain the skills needed to navigate career paths, whether as a freelancer or working for a media outlet. 

Media Studies 

  • Develop an understanding of mass media and its impact on society. 
  • Study the structures, content, and effects of the media industry, preparing you to engage with it professionally. 
  • Gain a broader perspective on how media influences the world and how you can contribute through your work. 

Multimedia 

  • Combine photography, audio, video, sound, and text to create compelling multimedia stories. 
  • Learn how to craft narratives that are suitable for broadcast through digital platforms, honing your technical and creative skills. 

Internship: Transition from Classroom to Real-World Experience 

In the third term, students have the opportunity to transition from classroom learning to practical, real-world applications through internships. These internships are designed to align with each student’s technical and creative interests. Here’s how students can benefit: 

  • News agencies and newspapers: Work as photojournalists capturing current events and telling important stories through your lens. 
  • NGOs: Document social issues, humanitarian efforts, and advocacy campaigns, contributing to causes that matter. 
  • Documentary film production companies: Combine photography with video and audio to create multimedia narratives. 
  • Cultural and historical institutions: Contribute to archival projects or exhibitions, documenting key social themes and preserving history. 

These internships provide hands-on experience, helping students build a professional portfolio that reflects their skills as visual storytellers. This practical work allows you to transition smoothly from the classroom into the broader media and social justice landscape. 

By focusing on both technical and practical elements, the PDP ensures students are fully prepared to make their mark in the world of photojournalism. This course offers a balance between classroom learning and real-world experience, setting up students for success in their future careers. 

Duration: The Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Programme is a year-long programme

Time: Mon – Fri     09h00 – 17h00 

 

Cost:  R22 050 for South African students and students from the continent. 

R63 340 for International students. 

For international students, It is advisable to pay an application and registration fee of R1100 instead of R100 upon your application to save on bank fees, although it is not compulsory

Projects in the Long Courses (when funds allow) 

This module introduces students to collaborative project-based work. The form and type of projects will be determined each year in collaboration with the Projects Unit at the Market Photo Workshop. Public Participatory Projects and Research Projects, in line with the Market Photo Workshop’s public engagement programming, are prioritised as the core areas of practice. These projects also provide an opportunity for students in both the PDP and APP to work together, contributing towards shared project outcomes. 

Equipment 

The use of Market Photo Workshop equipment is required for all students. Students must pay a refundable deposit for each item they book out. The equipment usage is closely monitored by the Officer: Resources during the course of the students’ studies. 

  • Short Courses students pay a deposit of R500. 
  • Long Courses students pay a deposit of R650. 

Note: If you damage or lose the equipment, your deposit will be kept by the Market Photo Workshop, and you will need to pay a new deposit to continue booking equipment. (Please see the Camera Rental Policy for further details.)
