The Market Photo Workshop is a division of the Market Theatre Foundation located in Newtown, Johannesburg. The Newtown precinct is situated in Johannesburg’s inner city and hosts several cultural facilities, such as:

  • Soweto’s Finest Dance Studio
  • Bus Factory 
  • Bag Factory
  • Umhlabathi Photography Collective

The area is kept clean and safe by public safety officers and cleaners. The Nelson Mandela Bridge links Newtown to Braamfontein and is within walking distance from the Market Theatre Foundation. 

 

Braamfontein is home to:

  • Wits University
  • Constitution Hill
  • Wits Art Gallery
  • Various entertainment venues popular with the local student community.

 

In addition to these visual art attractions, Newtown is within a 20 minute drive from: 

  • it was shot in Joburg, a photography initiative based in the Maboneng Precinct
  • Johannesburg Contemporary Art Foundation
  • Inside Out centre for the Arts 
  • Johannesburg Art Gallery
  • Keyes Art Mile. 

Nearby attractions also include Oriental Plaza in Fordsburg, just east of the Market Theatre Foundation.

BUS

Rea Vaya is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system that offers fast, safe and affordable public transport across Johannesburg.

  • Bus frequency ranges from 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the route and time of day.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Bus Service, or Metrobus, is another affordable bus service covering various routes.

  • Bus frequency ranges from 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the route and time of day.

Pros:

  • Safe, efficient, reliable and accessible to all. 
  • Rea Vaya buses use dedicated lanes, making them quicker than other bus services.  

Cons:

  • Not available 24/7, and bus frequency varies 
  • Rea Vaya routes are not as extensive as other bus services. (Metro buses are less frequent than Rea Vaya buses)

Minibus taxi

Minibus taxis are Johannesburg’s main form of transport for many commuters. Taxis can be boarded at taxi ranks or along designated routes.

Pros:

  • Frequent, affordable, and operate almost 24/7.
  • Cover routes not served by other transport options

Cons:

  • Some taxi drivers provide poor service, drive recklessly, or use unroadworthy vehicles.

 

Train

Metrorail Johannesburg connects central Johannesburg with major areas, including Soweto, Pretoria, Ekurhuleni and other major satellite towns.

Pros:

  • The cheapest form of public transport.

Cons:

  • Can be overcrowded during peak hours and subject to delays due to theft of cables and sleepers.

  • Book early: Residences typically open for bookings well in advance, so contact them at least three months before the academic year starts.
