Mentorships & Residencies
About
The Market Photo Workshop currently runs two mentorship-based photography grant programmes. The programmes have been developed as a platform from which photographers at a relatively progressed level might enhance and refine their practice through the guidance of an established practitioner. Aimed at emerging photographers, the mentorship process is envisaged as transfer of skills, experience, knowledge and professional practice that might shift talented photographers into a more advanced stage.
The mentorship programmes also ensure that rather than simply gaining a grant, the emerging photographer is afforded the support and guidance of a mentor, who is often also able to assist the photographer in gaining a foothold in the broader photography community, developing networks and growing relationships. The mentor works on a one-on-one mentoring process with the recipient, helping them to refine ideas, offering advice and often acting as a sounding board. The mentorship programmes also afford recipients group mentoring critiques, facilitating interaction between recipients, past recipients and industry experts. Mentors who have taken part include Mikhael Subotzky, Jo Ractliffe, Jodi Bieber, David Goldblatt, Peter McKenzie, Nadine Hutton and Jean Brundrit. The mentorship grants can be extended to develop and produce an exhibition of the work and, possibly, publication of the produced body of work.
