Mpho Khwezi’s exhibition ‘A Piece of Paper’ opening at The Market Photo Workshop’s Gallery 1989 with support from the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.

Thursday, 1 October 2020.

Recently introduced through the Photo Incubator Edition 5 virtual showcase on Photoform Africa, Mpho Khwezi’s ‘A Piece of Paper’ is an interpretation of conversations and perceptions gathered throughout Khwezi’s research and image making period. Experimenting with previously used film, Khwezi questions the written and unwritten rules of ownership, particularly of land but also of culture and identity.

The virtual showcase for Edition 5 is available on photoformafrica.com.

Entry to Market Photo Workshop premises is subject to a standard health screening. Bookings for gallery visits can be sent to exhibition@marketphotoworkshop.co.za

About the Photo Incubator Edition 5

With the support from the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, the Market Photo Workshop designed the 5th cycle of the Photo Incubator Programme to ensure that rather than simply gaining a grant, participating photographers were afforded the support of established art and photography practitioners, administrators and business experts – who were able to assist the photographers in gaining a foothold in the broader photography community, developing networks and growing relationships. The rationale behind the Photo Incubator Programme is to benefit emerging photographers – to better the lives of young photographers especially those coming from and living in marginalised areas such as informal settlements and townships. The main objectives are to develop local content and economies in townships by giving emerging photographers access to resources and business opportunities designed for practicing photographers who need support in further developing their photography business to the next level. The programme exposed the participating photographers to a wide variety of artistic practices to inspire their creative thought and develop a sense urgency for their enterprises.
