Borders Masterclass
Held at the Market Photo Workshop, the Masterclass was informed by the 8th Bamako Encounters, currently touring South Africa. The Bamako Encounters is the African photography biennale that is held in Mali by the Malian government with the support of Cultures France. The Bamako Encounters is a platform for African photography, critical discourse and training. The Masterclass is informed by the biennale and seeks to extend its influence through an extensive photography programme, open to photographers of the continent. The Masterclass was held for photographers looking to grow their critical and conceptual practice through the guidance of experienced and respected master photographers, as well as in conjunction with other emerging contemporaries with whom ideas can be exchanged and developed.
Facilitated by Jo Ractliffe, the Masterclass consisted of guest presentations, lectures and crit sessions by some of the country’s leading photographers, curators and writers, as well as other people dedicated to the field in other forms. Sharing their skills and experience, as well as guiding photographers into deeper consideration of their own work, were Rory Bester, Thembinkosi Goniwe, Pieter Hugo, Peter Mckenzie, Terry Kurgan, Themba Hadebe, Khwezi Gule, Stephen Hobbs, Patricia Hayes, Dennis da Silva, Andreas Kahlau, Federica Angelucci and Mikhael Subotzky.
